I had briefly mentioned at DINS 2002 that I was interested in getting a second dog that may enjoy agility as I had got the "bug". Within seconds a lady mentioned that a terrier named Lucky was in need of a home at Wanderers Haven Sanctuary in
My first memory of him is of a 9 month old terrier climbing up the kennel desperate for attention as there were 4 bigger dogs in the kennel with him and he did not want to be left out. As I was going on holiday the following week it did not seem sensible to consider him but to cut a long story short we never went on the holiday and Lucky came to live with us!
He had previously lived in a flat with an elderly couple. They were unable to take him for walks and his high energy levels resulted in him jumping up the owner and knocking him over. This resulted in a hospital stay and a broken arm, they decided that it was sensible to rehome Lucky.
Being a little superstitious I changed Luckys name to Ted.
As well as jumping up, Ted had all the usual adolescent rescue dog problems, the worst being eating his faeces. The hardest problem to overcome was his car sickness. I never thought I was going to be able to take him to agility training let alone a show. After many months of hard work (and fun) Ted fitted in to our family perfectly.I was so proud when he passed his bronze, silver and gold good citizens awards. Ted loved his agility from the beginning but
always found other things to distract him, another dog, another dogs toy,a treat on the floor or horse manure to munch. When we started shows the distractions became greater and his concentration less! He discovered burger vans and stall holders and even visited the spiritual healer when he was meant to be in the ring!
Over the last 2 years Ted's love of agility has taken over his wandering mind. To my delight we started to achieve clear rounds and even some places. This year he has been amazing winning 6 novice classes becoming senior, qualifying for the DINS final and achieving his agility warrant.
The season ended perfectly by winning the medium novice final of the first DARL.
Ted may have started off as Lucky but I have ended up being lucky in owning such a gorgeous clever dog.
